Common Ignition Problems We Fix
Ignition problems range from a minor annoyance to a vehicle completely out of commission. Joel Locksmith handles the full spectrum — from a quick cylinder adjustment to a complete ignition replacement — on-site, same-day, throughout Westminster and Orange County.
Key Won't Turn — The most common cause is a worn ignition cylinder where the internal pins no longer align cleanly with a well-used key. A wrong or duplicate key that wasn't cut precisely enough will also fail to turn the cylinder. We diagnose whether it's the key, the cylinder, or the steering column lock before recommending a fix.
Key Stuck in Ignition — The most common ignition complaint. Usually caused by worn key-to-cylinder interaction where the key depresses the retaining pin enough to go in but not enough to release cleanly on the way out. Can also be caused by a shift interlock issue (car not fully in Park), a dead battery, or a faulty ignition switch. Never force a stuck key — it can snap off inside the cylinder.
Ignition Cylinder Stripped or Loose — Over time the cylinder housing can become loose or the internal components can strip, causing the cylinder to spin freely without engaging the ignition switch. This requires cylinder replacement.
Broken Key in Ignition — A broken-off key in the ignition cylinder is an emergency situation. We use specialized extraction tools to remove the broken piece without damaging the cylinder, then cut a new key on the spot.
Ignition Lock Seized — A cylinder that has seized (often from corrosion, attempted theft damage, or extreme temperature) may need to be drilled out and replaced entirely. We assess this on-site and discuss options before proceeding.
Ignition Rekey vs Replacement
Ignition rekey — We remove the cylinder and replace the internal pins so it works with a different key (typically matching your door key). The cylinder housing stays in place. This is the right choice when the cylinder itself is in good condition but you want a different key to operate it — for example, after losing a key or buying a used car.
Ignition replacement — We remove the entire cylinder and install a new one. Required when the cylinder is physically broken, has been drilled, is spinning freely, or suffered attempted theft damage. A new cylinder is keyed and we cut a matching key on-site. This is also recommended when there's a security concern, such as when a key has been stolen.
Broken Key Extraction
A broken key in the ignition is stressful, but it's something we handle every day. The critical rule: do not try to remove it yourself with pliers, tweezers, or a screwdriver. Pushing the broken piece further in or damaging the cylinder turns a $85–$140 extraction into a full cylinder replacement.
We use precision locksmith extraction tools — hook picks, broken key extractors, and needle-nose instruments — designed specifically for this purpose. Once the broken piece is removed, we can cut a new key on-site using the remaining piece or from our key blank inventory. You drive away same-day.
Our Ignition Repair Process
1
Diagnose — We assess the ignition: inspect the key, test the cylinder, check the steering lock, and identify whether it's a mechanical or electrical ignition issue.
2
Quote — We give you a firm price before touching anything. No surprise fees. You approve before we start.
3
Extract or Repair — If there's a broken key in the cylinder, we extract it first using professional tools. If it's a stuck or seized cylinder, we address the root cause.
4
Rekey or Replace Cylinder — Based on the diagnosis and your preference, we either rekey the existing cylinder with new pin tumblers or install a new cylinder altogether.
5
Cut New Key & Test — We cut a new key on-site using our mobile key cutting equipment, program any transponder chip if required, and verify the ignition works perfectly through a full start cycle before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do not force it. Forcing a stuck key can snap it off inside the cylinder, turning a simple fix into a broken key extraction job. Try these steps first: make sure the steering wheel isn't locked (turn it gently left and right while pulling the key), confirm the gear selector is fully in Park (press the brake and push the selector firmly into Park), and check that the vehicle battery isn't dead. If none of those work, call Joel Locksmith at (310) 666-6121 — we extract stuck keys without damaging the cylinder.
Yes. When we replace or rekey an ignition cylinder, we can cut and configure the new cylinder so that your existing door key also operates the ignition — one key for everything. This is called a master key setup and it's included in our replacement service when requested. Just mention it when you call.
A straightforward ignition cylinder replacement typically takes 45–90 minutes on-site. Vehicles where access to the column requires additional disassembly — such as some GM, Chrysler, or European models — may take up to 2 hours. We give you an accurate time estimate based on your specific vehicle before we begin.
A completely seized ignition could be the cylinder (worn or corroded tumblers), but it can also be a locked steering column (by far the most common cause — try turning the steering wheel while turning the key), a dead battery causing electronic features to lock out, or a faulty ignition switch (the electrical component behind the mechanical cylinder). We diagnose the root cause before recommending any repair — we'll never sell you a cylinder replacement if you just need your steering wheel unlocked.
Ha — while a shiny new car would certainly solve the ignition problem, ignition cylinder replacement typically runs $180–$400 all-in. That's a significantly better deal than a car payment. Most ignition issues are mechanical repairs that a skilled locksmith can resolve same-day, getting you back on the road quickly without dealership wait times or major expense. Call us first.
